FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

This CE-100D (D denotes dual pickups) is an excellent example of a late style CE-100. The CE-100 body was deepened in the 1970s and the mahogany neck was switched to maple in 1976. It sports the less common blonde (natural) finish and optional Guild Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. Guild dropped the Capri model name in the early 1970s and it was a direct competitor of the Gibson ES-175 which it closely resembles. This particular guitar was made in Westerly, Rhode Island well after the company moved from Hoboken, New Jersey. Like other instrument manufacturers, Guild went through some acquisitions, the most recent by Fender Musical Instrument Corp. in late 1995. Acquisitions have hurt the quality and reputation of other companies. Fender's acquisition by CBS, and Norlin's acquisition of Gibson ruined the quality of those company's instruments produced in the 1970s. Guild, along with Ampeg, G&L and Gretsch, was one of a few companies to produce guitars that were as good, if not better, than what they had been producing in the past despite being acquired by another company. Today, Guild is enjoying an infusion of capital and marketing muscle from Fender. It is not likely that Fender will let the quality of Guild suffer as had happened to Fender itself in the 1970s.
