FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

The L-5000 was one of the few carry-over models from the Leo Fender era and was listed in the 1992 catalog, though production ceased by the middle of that year. The L-5000 pictured was custom made for John McLaren Jr., G&L factory manager and son of the owner of BBE Inc./G&L. The neck has the standard BBE-era satin finish and L-2000 style headstock instead of the Leo era sickle headstock. The unusual feature of this bass is the thick veneer ebony fingerboard. Prior to BBE's switch to slab boards, G&L's were fitted with thin veneer fingerboards of either ebony or rosewood. The thick veneer board is transitional between the other two. Also, the bass is fitted with standard Schaller tuners rather than the G&L-labeled Schaller "Ultra Lite" tuners.
