FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

Introduced in 1963, the Guild 98-RT amp is a dead ringer for the first version of the Ampeg Reverberocket. Although Ampeg stamped the metal chassis and silk screened them for Guild, the amps were designed and built (and sometimes copied) by Guild in their facilities in Hoboken and Elizabeth, New Jersey. The earliest 98-RT amps had "Reverb Amp" silk screened on the control panel and a leather handle, but soon were changed to "Reverb Amp 98 RT" and a suitcase handle. The amp was available with either a 12-inch or 15-inch speaker until it was discontinued in 1966. As expected, the Guild sounds very much like a Reverberocket, which is to say, quite good. Although not an exceptionally powerful amp, the 98RT has a wonderfully warm and clean tone that was clearly aimed at jazz players rather than rockers. And that lush reverb... wow!
