Introduced in 1976, the R100RS was probably the first purpose-built sport
touring motorcycle. I remember one of the teachers in my high school
had a gold RS with the snowflake wheels. I used to go out to the parking
lot and just stare at it. It quickly become another of my "dream"
motorcycles that I had to have one day. When BMW announced that 1984
would the last year for the R100RS and R100RT, I resigned myself to the fact
that I'd never have a new one. Fast forward to 1988... BMW re-releases
both models in heavily revised form. I was first in line to buy one.
This last incarnation of the RS was the most refined version as it sported
a single sided swingarm, new wheels, new forks, new brakes and other subtle
changes. As far as I'm concerned it has the best fairing ever fitted
to a motorcycle.
I couldn't help trying to refine the bike even more so I changed a few things, notably, stainless steel brake lines, K&N air filter, re-jetted carbs, Progressive Suspension fork springs, sintered bronze valve guides with teflon seals, balanced the pistons, lightweight wristpins, Ferodo brake pads, Luftmeister sidestand and bar-backs, and a custom Corbin Gunfighter saddle.
