FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

G&L would take special orders from dealers for models that fall outside the usual catalog offerings. These included ASAT Classics with double bound bodies in the mid-1990s and a reboot of the L-1000 in the late 2000s. The Doheny shown here is a special production run (SPR) for Dave's Guitar Shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It is a standard Doheny with optional matching headstock and a "competition stripe" similar to what Fender had on the 1969-70 Mustang and Mustang Bass in Candy Apple Red, Lake Placid Blue and Competition Orange. The Competition Stripe Doheny was available in Candy Apple Red (shown here), as well as Vintage White, Lake Placid Blue, Emerald Green and Pharoah Gold. It sports a chechen fingerboard which G&L began using in early 2017 as a replacement for rosewood due to supply issues and compliance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which protects all rosewood species. It has a hardness rating very similar to the Indian Rosewood it replaces and has a closed pore structure giving a smooth feel like ebony. The attractive figuring doesn't hurt either. Fingerboard wood be damned, this Doheny is boss!
