This is not a back-lighted panel, but rather the panel material emits light
when a voltage is applied. This high voltage technology, while common
in other areas such as the automotive industry, was probably not a great idea
for the working musician dealing with ungrounded equipment at that time.
You can appreciate this if you've ever been zapped when your lips
touch a microphone while playing guitar or bass.
