At age twenty-two I decided to learn to play the guitar and I promptly
purchased my first student grade acoustic guitar. After a few years, I sold
my “beginner's instrument” and purchased my first professional quality bass
and acoustic guitar. I came to realize that there was a tremendous difference
in sound, playability, materials and craftsmanship in these instruments compared
to the student grade models. Little did I know that these events would lead
me into the world of guitar collecting, and ultimately to a senior contributing
editorship at 20th Century Guitar Magazine
as well as serving as technical editor on the book,
Ampeg: The Story
Behind The Sound by Gregg Hopkins and Bill
Moore.
To answer the most frequently asked question I get: Yes, I really do play them all. The second most frequently asked question I get is, "What is your favorite guitar?" The only answer is, "The one I'm playing at this moment is my favorite." But I can at least tell you that my favorite style of solid body guitars include the Fender Telecaster and G&L ASAT for their utter simplicity and versatility, and that my favorite archtops have a wang bar for rockabilliosity.
