FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
The second style SB-1 was introduced in mid-1985. I received a newer, sleeker body with contoured back and a Precision Bass-style split coil pickup in place of the Jazz Bass inspired 8-pole single coil pickup that was used on the previous version. The body wood was changed from maple to poplar, but the neck pretty much stayed the same as it was on the old style SB-1. The bass shown here has features only found on the second style SB-1s that were produced early. The pickguard and control knob are plastic and it uses a different pickup than that found on later SB-1s. In addition, this particular bass was listed as “experimental” in the G&L production log book because the pickup is not a G&L MFD. It is a Schaller PBX pickup and was fitted to some SB-1's made in 1985.
