FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

In 1965, Ampeg introduced a new Portaflex amp for "universal" use. Dubbed the SB-12, this little amp could be used for guitar, string bass, accordion or electric bass. The earliest versions used 7591A or 7868 power tubes, but 6L6GCs were used from late 1967 until the SB-12 was discontinued in 1971. With a single channel, simple controls and 25-watts of power, the SB-12 makes a great practice amp. Plugged into a 1x15 extension cabinet, the SB-12 can easily fill a small venue with its smooth, round bass tone. This smallest of Portaflexes has a very big sound.
