FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

The third and final version of the SC-3 was introduced in late 1987. The changes from the second version (1984-87) to the third version (1987-91) were more than just cosmetic. The body on this version of the SC-3 is the same one as the Skyhawk and the pickups were changed from Skyhawk units to S-500 units around 1990. In addition, the guitar was given a Stratocaster style pickguard and the fingerboard material was standardized as rosewood. It’s interesting to note that all the SC-3s have color matched necks beginning in mid-1986. This was originally done to conceal a small batch of mineral stained maple that was used for SC-3 neck blanks. While the mineral stained wood is structurally sound, it is not aesthetically perfect. The SC-3s with color matched necks sold so well that G&L Sales requested that the practice be continued and most, but not all, SC-3s made after mid-1986 have color matched necks. The '88 SC-3 shown here is blue, but it was also available in bright screaming red.
